Urhobo Group Justifies Blowing Up Of Oil Facilities

Militancy may be returning to the Niger Delta as aggrieved Urhobo militants under the aegis of Urhobo Gbagbako, who blew up oil facilities in Ihwrenen and Ejophe communities in Ughelli North and Ughelli South Local Government Areas, Delta State, justified their decision to be due to the marginalization and neglect of Urhobo nation by the outgoing administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“The Urhobo nation, as the fifth largest ethnic group in the country, has long been marginalized in the presidential amnesty programme and pipeline surveillance jobs and contracts. Even the Delta Steel Company, DSC, Aladja, that is supposed to be the only federal project in Urhoboland, has been grounded for years,” the group said in a statement by its National Chairman, Otega Obire.

He warned that the Urhobo hospitality, simplicity and maturity exhibited to ensure the smooth functioning of government at all levels, should not be mistaken for cowardice.

The group therefore told the incoming government to create a level playing ground for bidding and allocation of contracts in the oil pipeline surveillance with particular reference to the “Urhobos who are the major host communities of oil facilities and gas plants in line with the Local Content Act.”

It also called for the speedy resuscitation of DSC to reduce unemployment and restiveness in their domain, and by extension promote the economic fortunes of the people.

Sambisa Forest: I Never Believed We would Make it out Alive — Rachael, Christian Hostage

Penultimate Saturday, 275 rescued victims of Boko Haram were moved from Sambisa forest to the Malkohi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp on the outskirts of Yola, Adamawa State capital. The victims, women and children, were driven into the camp amid tight security.

They arrived the camp after almost three days journey which forced the victims to be exhausted. Many of them, especially kids, could not alight from the vehicles that brought them. They had to be assisted by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, the Red Cross, the military and other agencies in the camp.

The children looked malnourished. But more worrisome is the fact that many of them had gunshot
injuries.

Vanguard adds that the journey from Sambisa to Yola lasted over 72 hours owing to many reasons. One, the military had to do a mop up of the roads in the forest to clear landmines believed to have been planted in the dreaded forest by the fleeing insurgents. A military bulldozer had to be used to clear the roads for the vehicles conveying the victims to have access to the road linking Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

President Jonathan implicated in million dollars contract scam [Details]

President Jonathan has been implicated in the awarding of multi-million dollars Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) contracts to two factitious firms, according to The Nation. With less than a month to hand over, President Jonathan has come under scrutiny for making last minutes appointments

The contracts in question were said to have been awarded by the president to Messrs CTOW Terminal & Marine Services and Ibejige Services Limited, two unregistered ghost companies in defiance of due process.

The controversial contracts meant for the provision of third party towage services (TPTS) at Warri and Onne ports pilotage districts have come under intense scrutiny following revelations by sources close to the Federal Ministry of Transport (FMOT) in Abuja that the award of the contracts by NPA to the two firms did not follow due process .

Added to the fact that the companies are not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), they also do not have a known address.

Finding by The Nation, indicates that the president’s approval for the contracts was contained in a letter last year to the NPA through the Federal Ministry of Transport on August 14, 2014.

Eight people, including students and a nursing mother were crushed to death after a tanker carrying diesel product rammed into a Volkswagen car on Sunday May 3rd. The car was coming from Otukpa and was heading towards Ugbokolo in Okpokwu LGA when the accident occurred. The tanker actually fell on the vehicle.
