I read this article this morning and i found it really interesting and educative and with permission, i decided to share it with you all. It reads;
"I
woke up this morning and read in the news that over 70% of students who sat for
the November/December 2014 WASSCE failed to pass the exam once more, it was also
revealed that 28,817 results were withheld due to examination malpractice. How
did the educational system become so bad and how has the value system decayed
over time? My lamentations!
I had a discussion online with some of my
university course mates who are presently serving in various states in Nigeria,
teaching in secondary schools precisely and they were all lamenting over the
pitiable state of students they are teaching and the decay in the educational
system, with them having to cope with students in their senior secondary who
can’t speak, talk more of writing in English. Where are we heading Nigeria? Who
is to blame for this? The teachers, parents or the Government, I would leave
you to answer that.
Now, what can we do about this? My focus would be primarily
on serving and intending corps members, who have been or would be posted to
schools. You are veritable members of the education family. I believe we can
make a big difference by just taking small actions. If only we can reach these
students, we can teach them, not just academics but also core values by
adopting the ethics of teaching and doing things right in their schools.
Teaching is a profession that teaches others, whether it is recognised or not,
you should know that what you are doing is noble. We should accept this
responsibility and go the extra mile for these students, even if it would take
extra classes to do so. We also have to be role models to them. NYSC is a call
to service, let’s not be discouraged as we face, headlong this cancerous
educational challenge. Lets re-invent and re-programme our mindset and obey the
clarion call, this is a call to service. We can make a difference in the life of
this young people by giving our all in the one year of service The future of
this young generation is in our hands. Furthermore, The strength of a nation is
in the strength of motherhood, educate a man and you educate an individual,
educate a girl child and you have educated a nation, let’s not fail to educate
the girl child, especially in the Northern part of the country. May I remind you, just as there is an office
of the president, there is also the office of the youth corper and the citizen-
with attendant duties and responsibilities, not only right and privileges!
Activate your office today! Nigeria is ours. We can make a difference in the
educational system, changing this young Nigerians, one person at a time.
Education=
Future!"
